Intern Spotlight

Meet Emily!

We asked our 2025 Summer Intern, Emily Anderson – college sophomore at the University of Kentucky, a few questions about her time spent at The Gingerbread House this summer – and we’d love for you to take a few minutes to read what she had to share! Her words beautifully capture the heart of our mission and the impact of this work. We are grateful that she enjoyed her time as much as we enjoyed having her!

First Impressions:

“On my first day at the Gingerbread House, I was immediately greeted with smiling and enthusiastic women. From the beginning, it was clear to see how passionate all of the staff at the Gingerbread House are about making our community a better place. The bright decorations and inviting environment inside the Gingerbread House make you immediately feel at peace and comfortable, too.”

Favorite Part of the Job:

“My favorite part of interning at the Gingerbread House was being able to make a positive difference in the lives of the children. Having the opportunity to sit down and talk to them alongside the Child Life Specialist was so inspiring because it meant I could be an uplifting spirit in their life. Seeing the child laughing and smiling while conversing with me brought an inexplainable amount of joy, every time!”

Biggest Surprise:

“I was amazed by how truly important Forensic Interviews are. By sitting amongst law enforcement and investigators, it showcased how heavily their cases rely on the forensic interviews. The Gingerbread House staff did an excellent job of always ensuring the child felt comfortable and safe at all times. It was inspiring to witness.”

To Future Interns:

“If you’re thinking about applying, do it! You never know how much your personality or smile could directly impact the child’s life. These children have experienced deep pain, heartache, and fear; however, you have the opportunity to help make them feel safe, even for a short time, which may be a feeling they may never have experienced before. Protecting the youth is so important because they are our future and bettering the future is something that you will forever be grateful for being a part of.”

Biggest Lesson:

“It has been an honor and privilege to work as the Summer Intern, and I can say from the bottom of my heart that my experience at the Gingerbread House has changed my outlook on life. Life can be difficult, messy, and complicated. However with child advocacy centers like the Gingerbread House, light can be found in a dark world through the work they do. The Gingerbread House has taught me to act with integrity and compassion in every aspect of life as well as the importance of being a positive influence in others lives. I am forever thankful for my experience at the Gingerbread House.”

Fun Facts About Me:

“I’m an avid runner and hiker—I run every day and spend most weekends hiking the trails in Kentucky! I find peace and calm in doing both.”

“I recently learned how to sail!”
